Meeting the Needs of Families and Individuals
By age 21, young adults with disabilities must graduate from high school. After graduation, there are limited options for community involvement. For many young adults with disabilities, activities and social interactions are limited to in-home care by a family member.
Tavon Center will provide a place where young adults with disabilities can connect with the natural environment, contribute to meaningful activities, and interact with peers and the community in a safe, healthy, and productive place. In this way, the center also provides peace of mind and a respite for families and caregivers.
Organizational background
Tavon Corporation was established in 2003 by a group of parents, family members, and friends of young adults with disabilities who were concerned with the lack of opportunities for young adults with disabilities after high school graduation (age 21).
Since 2003, the members of the corporation board have met monthly to discuss the research and development of Tavon Center. Board members have been actively involved in the vision and execution of the center thus far.
Initial plan
Tavon currently has a benefactor-provided lease of a five-acre semi-rural property in Issaquah. We have installed our initial outdoor therapy gardens, with wheelchair-accessible raised beds and a sensory garden surrounded by accessible paths. We removed an existing structure from the site and have begun construction on a building that will house our indoor program, with an open area for work, meals, and activities; a cooking facility; and accessible restrooms. Both indoors and out, our clients will learn about and be involved in growing, harvesting, and selling vegetables, herbs, and flowers in addition to participating in life skills and community-based activities.
The maximum number of clients to be served at this facility is 12. We also hope to have a rotational program with clients from similar urban programs. (Clients from Tavon would attend urban sites on occasion, and clients from the urban program would come to Tavon for a more rural experience.)
