About Us

Tavon Center was created by a group of concerned parents, friends, and professionals that recognized the need for creative, community-based programs for young adults with disabilities who have graduated from high school. We are located on a beautiful, five-acre piece of land in Issaquah, Washington. Our facility consists of an indoor activity center, many gardens (including wheelchair-accessible raised beds) and wooded areas, and is home to a few small animals (goats and a rabbit).

Goals

At Tavon Center, we strive to connect our clients to the community, to nature, and to their peers. We also seek to provide much needed respite to family caregivers of young adults with disabilities.

Our vocational program includes courses that emphasize horticulture, educating our clients about growing, harvesting, and selling vegetables, herbs, and flowers. We have a long-term goal to sell our produce at local farmers markets. In addition to this vocational side of the program, we provide access to community programs, general recreational activities, and volunteer opportunities. Examples of these include:

  • Visiting the local library

  • Connecting with local parks and recreation facilities and programs

  • Visiting local attractions

  • Going to the movies or to restaurants for meals

Our hope is that the Tavon experience will provide our clients with the background and support they need to eventually obtain employment within the community (whether individually or with a job coach). In addition, our program provides:

  • Peer interaction and support

  • Support and respite for family members who may be providing in-home care

  • Community awareness of our population of people with disabilities and their ability to be productive, valued members of society

  • A feeling of belonging to the larger community

  • Elimination of boredom, depression, inactivity in both in-home caregivers and care receivers

The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses.
