About Us
Tavon Center was created by a group of concerned parents, friends, and professionals that recognized the need for creative, community-based programs for young adults with disabilities who have graduated from high school.
Goals
The primary goal for Tavon Center in 2008 is to finalize our building and open our doors to clients.
We will design and develop a vocational program with emphasis in horticulture, to educate our clients about growing, harvesting, and selling vegetables, herbs, and flowers. The clients would interact with the community regularly by selling the produce at local farmers markets. In addition to this vocational side of the program, our clients would have access to community-provided programs, general recreational activities, and volunteer opportunities. Examples of these include:
-
Volunteering at local senior centers
-
Greeting shoppers at local stores
-
Using public parks and recreation facilities, such as swimming pools, gyms, etc.
-
Going to the movies or to restaurants for meals
Once the location is prepared and the programs are in place, we will open our doors to clients and begin day-to-day operations.
Our hope is that the Tavon experience will provide our clients with the background and support they need to eventually obtain employment within the community (whether individually or with a job coach). In addition, our program will provide:
-
Peer interaction and support
-
Support and respite for family members who may be providing in-home care
-
Community awareness of our population of people with disabilities and their ability to be productive, valued members of society
-
A feeling of belonging to the larger community
-
Elimination of boredom, depression, inactivity in both in-home caregivers and care receivers
