Program | Client TestimonyLeah's Story
Tavon Center has a special impact on each and every family it touches. We thank Leah's mom for sharing her story to spread the word about the immense need for programs like Tavon.
Leah is our first child. She is 26 years old, and she has Cerebral Palsy. Having a child with special needs has a profound effect on a family. Managing their hectic day to day routine of therapies, medical and school appointments and learning to accept the changing news regarding their health and future has been just few things we have confronted.
We had been in a very supportive environment from the time Leah was born. However; when Leah turned 21 and had graduated from high school, we were confronted with many uncertainties. She no longer had somewhere to go every day. She missed seeing all her friends at school. Leah was becoming increasingly bored at home. She longed to be involved and interact with people. So we tried to help fill this void in her life by being as active as we could with her, but she was always with us, her parents. We researched and visited Day Centers, but most of them were geared for the elderly.
We were all getting discouraged because Leah needed an outlet. She needed to be with her peers and be involved in more social and recreational activities than what we could provide. This outlet or program had to supply enough protection and staff would need to be aware of Leah’s medical, physical and emotional needs. We wanted the peace of mind and the relief knowing that Leah would be safe and cared for in a welcoming, structured and supportive environment…..Tavon Center was our answer.
It has been 2 years now since Leah first started coming to Tavon. And we have seen Leah grow into a more independent young woman. Leah has made new friends. She has experienced new things with a variety of people. Leah is no longer bored. She is as excited to go to Tavon each day now, as she was 2 years ago.
We know firsthand the benefit of a day center like Tavon. It becomes a vital service- a necessity. We are so thankful for all who had this vision of creating this wonderful place, called the Tavon Center.
